UPK: How Do I Know What to Choose?
Universal PreKindergarten (UPK) brings together traditional preschool and transitional kindergarten under one umbrella, creating a bridge to kindergarten. These programs provide families with more choices of high-quality learning environments that meet their needs.
Attending a high-quality early education program helps children develop critical social-emotional, cognitive, and early academic skills, preparing them for kindergarten and beyond. Finding the best option for your child takes time and research. There is no one answer that is right for every child and there may be multiple great options for your family and child. Remember, you know your child best!
Questions To Think About
- Is there a daily plan to guide learning? Does the schedule include an appropriate amount of play time, rest, and learning activities?
- How many children will be in the classroom?
- Are additional adults available to help in the classroom? What are the opportunities for family involvement?
- How does the outdoor play environment support physical development?
- Are children expected to sit at tables or desks? For how long?
- Has your child experienced playgroups and/or separation from a primary caregiver for extended periods?
- Does your child communicate personal needs, like using the restroom?
- How do the teachers support the child’s home language? How is children’s play integrated into daily learning activities? Are teachers and children engaged in conversations?
- Do the children appear to enjoy learning?
- Does the classroom include learning focuses, such as early literacy, math, etc.?
- Will my child with exceptional needs be supported? What options are available to ensure my child is cared for throughout the full day while I am at work? How will my child’s social and emotional needs be addressed?
