Health Development

Did you know that a child’s brain learns best when we support the health of the whole child? It’s true! Before young children can begin to learn and pick up new skills, they need good nutrition, regular check-ups with a medical professional, nurturing relationships, and the chance to express their emotions in a safe space. When a child’s physical, emotional,
and mental health needs are met, lasting learning can take place.

Tips to Support Your Child’s Development
  • Learn about your child’s development and get more support from ParentsCAN and Community Resources for Children.
  • Take your child to the doctor for their check-ups and to get the required immunizations needed for school.
  • Teach your child how to wash their hands. Children should put soap on their hands and scrub for 20 seconds before rinsing. Singing a song like “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” can make hand washing fun. Teach your child to turn off the water with a paper towel.
  • Support your child with toilet learning and how to wipe when away from home.
  • Take your child to the dentist.
  • Provide your child with healthy meals and snacks.
  • Have your child help you cook! Children learn math, science, health, and safety when they cook with you. They are also more likely to try new foods if they help you cook them!
  • Make time for your child to be physically active for at least 60 minutes a day. Go for a walk, go to the park—anything works as long as they are moving.
  • Ensure your child gets at least 10 to 13 hours of sleep and rest (including naps) so that they are ready to learn.
