Math

Making math enjoyable for young children helps develop their numeracy skills, including recognizing numbers, quantities, and patterns. This involves sorting objects and understanding their order. Your child’s natural curiosity can turn everyday experiences into valuable
numeracy lessons.

Here are some fun ways to incorporate math into your child’s daily activities.

Use Math Language:
  • Incorporate Math Terms: Use words like more, less, longer, shorter, square, round, etc., during everyday activities
  • Real-Life Connections: Relate math and numbers to daily life, such as cooking, counting money, or telling time
Number Sense:
  • Roll-a-Snack Game: Set out bowls of small snacks and give your child an empty bowl and dice. Roll the dice and count out that number of snacks into the bowl.
  • Pretend Play: Integrate numbers and counting into pretend play, like counting cookies for a stuffed animal tea party or paying for items in a pretend store
  • Board and Card Games: Play games that involve counting and matching
Sorting:
  • Various Items: Use objects like buttons, beads, pasta, rocks, and coins
  • Different Containers: Utilize muffin tins, bowls, hula hoops, ice cube trays, or egg cartons
  • Sort by Different Criteria: Encourage sorting by color, size, shape, function, or texture, and then try sorting in a different way
  • Real-Life Sorting: Involve your child in sorting tasks like laundry, silverware, groceries, and toys
  • Encourage Collections: Have your child start a collection of rocks, shells, coins, or buttons, and use it for counting, sorting, and discussing similarities and differences.
Measurement:
  • Cooking Adventures: Involve your child in cooking activities to explore measurements
  • Exploring Measuring Tools: Introduce tools like rulers, scales, tape measures, measuring cups and spoons, calendars, clocks, and thermometers
  • Estimating Games: Play games where your child guesses and checks measurements, such as predicting how long an ice cube will take to melt or counting how many times they can jump in 10 seconds
Shapes:
  • Manipulate Shapes: Use blocks, tangrams, or cut-out shapes to create designs or pictures
  • Outdoor Exploration: Take a walk and spot different shapes in the neighborhood
